Hi Frank: So, you think that 10GbE is a great marketing idea, but it really isn't Ethernet. Is that the jist of your message? I'll have to return to this later on today, or over the weekend. But I just wanted to ascertain that the sentence above accurately reflects your points and views in a nutshell. No, not quite. What I was trying to express was a certain degree of asperity with the marketing of 10GbE as 'just ethernet but faster'; this statement, found often in even technical web-papers, confused me and it took me some time to find out what 10GbE really is. It is more, and better, than that. The point to point protocol (or non-collision detection part) solves some major issues, and I like that. Thus it is ethernet LAN for the end user, while also porviding a nice point to point protocol for the metro/core- this solves some problems without going to ATM in the back end while leveraging off the existing comfort level of local access with our well known NIC cards. This is even an elegant solution. Now I acknowledge that just saying 10Ge is ethernet but faster or fatter is good marketing, since it simplifies the issue for the end user.
