In my response, I indicated that I would not take great solace from seeing the votes thrown out and would be very upset to see Gore win on a legal technicality-the equivalent of squeezing a camel through the eye of a legal needle. Here's another view. Consider the fact that the NAACP has vote-monitoring apparatus throughout the South. They started receiving calls on election day as early as 9am regarding irregularities. Consider also that voting equipment in Duval county is the most antiquated and most likely to reject ballots. We have not heard complaints from any other state on this issue-ONLY IN FLORIDA. The state of Florida compiled a list of felons which apparently was distributed and used to check against voter registration lists. Fine. Except that 12000 people were put on that list in error. No noise from other states on this issue. ONLY IN FLORIDA. We all know by now that votomatic machines in 17 counties have a much higher error rate than the newer equipment in the other 50 counties, which certainly could have swung several thousand votes either way. The ballots in Seminole and Martin county, though illegal according to a technical reading of the statute, will probably be counted, while Gore has said that no military absentee ballot should be discarded on the technical issue of the postmark. Bush's margin of victory remains within the statistical margin of error of the whole state. Hence, the outcome of this forever tainted election can only be described as a "technical" victory. In the face of all this, which occurred on Jeb Bush's watch, and Gore's behavior notwithstanding, I might just as well ask "Where are the Republicans?" I don't recall seeing a single post expressing reservations about the legitimacy of the likely outcome here. Everyone who is high-fiving would do well to consider that the inauguration will not stop the Justice department investigations(and I would remind this board that it was only through dogged investigation that the original denials of "racial profiling" in New Jersey were eventually proven to be a deliberate conspiracy) , it will not stop interested parties from continuing to delve into recounting behavior through the Freedom of Information Act, and likely treating us all to a drip-drip of sleazy news that will continue to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the FLorida outcome. All in all, gloating is not only not warrented by the facts, it's also very unbecoming.
