Taiwan UMC Q1 sales to drop 10-15 pct vs Q4 -paper
TAIPEI, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) (NYSE:UMC - news) said sales in the first quarter of 2001 would fall by 10 to 15 percent from the fourth quarter of this year, local newspapers reported on Saturday.

The papers said UMC, the world's second largest microchip foundry, cited worse-than-expected orders for the sales decline.

The mass-circulation Commercial Times said UMC's monthly sales in the first quarter would drop to some T$9 billion, but the monthly average estimate was still up nearly 40 percent when compared to the first quarter of 2000.

UMC officials were not immediately available for comment.

In a statement on Friday, UMC raised its 2000 pretax profit target to T$50.813 billion from an earlier projection of T$49.794 billion after posting record sales in November.

UMC said on Thursday its sales surged 267.76 percent to a record T$10.868 billion in November compared with the same month a year earlier.

On Friday, UMC shares fell T$0.50 to end at T$52, while the benchmark TAIEX (^TWII - news) rose 0.77 percent.

(US$1 equals T$33)
