Dell Tops in Customer Satisfaction Ranking of PC Servers: Survey

(survey conducted for China, Japan)

December 4, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Dell Computer KK has reached the top ranking in customer satisfaction among midsize enterprises in the category of PC servers, a survey said.

The customer satisfaction survey was released on Nov. 29, by Multimedia Research Institute Inc. , which specializes in various studies on the information technology (IT) market. The survey rates Dell Computer as the top in "total satisfaction" in the category of PC servers, along with high appraisals in some areas, including "price."

IBM Japan Ltd. ranked in first place in the category of office servers. The computer giant received high scores in items related to hardware.

Dell Computer earned high marks in such items as "price," "performance," "trouble-shooting," and "response to inquiries/calls." It got an overall high grade of 66 points in "total satisfaction." And the most remarkable appraisal is found in the item of "price." Dell got 74 points, or 14 points above the average of 60.

Following Dell in "total satisfaction," was Toshiba Corp. in second place with 62 points; and rated in third place are NEC Corp., IBM Japan, Hitachi Ltd., and Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd., each with 61 points.

Office servers of IBM Japan were highly evaluated for "price," "reliability," and "ease of operation." The company got 67 points in "total satisfaction" with a grade in each item, except "price," higher than the average by 5 points or more. Toshiba and NEC shared the second ranking in "total satisfaction" in office computers.

The survey covered leading midsize enterprises with a yearly turnover of 5 billion yen to 20 billion yen. Multimedia Research Institute issued questionnaires to almost 10,000 midsize firms based in 23 wards of Tokyo as well as 12 large cities nationwide. Responses were obtained from 2,068 companies.

Responses to PC server-related questions reached 2,150 (note from Nikkei Computer: this figure is due to the fact that some companies introduced more than two PC servers), while that for office-server related questions was 1,106. The questionnaire consists of nine hardware-related items, such as "price," "performance," and "scalability" as well as 12 service-related items, such as "support for implementing hardware," "trouble-shooting," and "response to inquiries/calls." The total satisfaction was computed using a satisfaction rating and a level of importance in each item.
