Hi Mitch
I take the same position that Jesus did regarding the book of Genesis. While there are undoubtably symbolic elements within the book, for the most part it reads like history. Adam , Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph are all real, historical people. Granted there is a great deal of the miraculous interwoven throughout the text but only an anti-supernatural bias would automatically assume these accounts are mythological for that reason alone.

"Guns don't kill people. Bullets do"
I believe the usual formulation of that statement reads "guns don't kill, People do" So I'm not sure I quite follow the analogy.
That the object of disobedience is the Knowledge of Good and Evil must be symbolic in some way, yes?
I agree, but the object is not also the means is it? Actually, you left something very important out , the real object was the Knowledge of Good and Evil with the result of becoming like God Satan's deception started with questioning God's word "Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?", God's truthfulness, "You will not surely die", and His character, "for God knows that in the day that you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil" Satan lied on all three accounts. Adam and Eve did know good and evil but it was as a result of personally experiencing corruption, not as God knows in His perfect holiness. This did result in their death. Spiritually this happened the moment they disobeyed and shortly thereafter, physically. Their disobedience was the cause of sin and death's entrance into our world. The thing that they thought would elevate them and make them like God, only served to destroy them and cast them into chains of darkness. Satan knows a winning strategy when he sees one and so you here the same thing said today as did Adam and Eve, "Has God said?"
Have a good evening
Greg
