Well it's not the starting of the rumor that causes trouble, it's the spreading and knee-jerk reacting on it. SUNW is an attractive short, everyone will use any excuse they can to sell your stock (borrowing it from your broker). If you don't want them to be able to use your stock to short, put a limit-order in for $100, or get the certificates and put them in a safe. I believe that this prevents the broker from lending it out. If everybody did this, short selling would be impossible, and the price would run up to astronomical levels (is this a good thing? I think not on balance).

P.S. Can anyone confirm this as a way of preventing short-selling of your stock?
