K or anyone: Here is Merrill (via Briefing.com) on retail sector. Anyone have insight into their assertion that retail outperforms when rates are cut? M2
3:33PM Merrill on Retailing : Firm reports that their proprietary numbers from RCT systems demonstrates that cumulatively retail traffic is down 3% at department stores and up 0.1% at malls; traffic has been declining everyday since the Friday after Thanksgiving on a cumulative basis and expects numbers to turn negative before the last minute surge; in talking with the discount stores all have reported that they are below plan including Walmart; however firm recommends that investors should initiate positions in the retail sector before interest rates come down as retail stocks historically outperform when rates are cut.
