Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson said on Thursday it was launching its first i-mode mobile phone in Japan for Japanese NTT-DoCoMo's Internet service, which has more than 15 million subscribers.

I-mode is a mobile Internet connection offering services such as e-mail, e-commerce and banking and enabling users to download data such as maps, weather forecasts and games.

"In Japan, the growth of the mobile Internet market is very strong," Ericsson said in a statement.

Its i-mode phone model is called the ER209i.
