You know, if Gore improbably managed to pull this one out, I think the bloviating pundits of the right would make it look like they let Clinton off easy. On the other hand, the lack of a focus for their hatred will no doubt leave them with a true emotional void during the next four years.

I just read last week's "Lexington" column in the Economist, which put forth the "loser will win" view. Not for Bush and Gore, but for the parties in the 2002 elections. Personally, I figure that with Tom DeLay and Trent Lott riding herd on him, W's going to have some problem looking "moderate" in any conventional sense of the word. The only thing that really worries me is the SC and W's allegedly expressed admiration for Thomas and Scalia. Another "best man for the job" on tap, if the opportunity arises.
