Mary, Re: He was the one that unnecessarily guided The Street to a blow out 2d quarter. After blowing that guidance, any normally intelligent person would have provided a very, very cautious quidance for the next quarter, but he was still calling for a very agressive 4-8 % growth

But do you think a CFO has much better things to do than manage the street(and the stock price) ?

Hi Mary,
Andy Bryant has not been your favorite person.

On the issue of style, I agree with you that Andy is colorless, and has a rambling presentation style. He does not offer an elegant simple vision.

Each time Intel's earnings falter, he takes your ire. He is merely the messenger of the bad news. You have to blame the industry, or the company. All businesses are unpredictable, but semiconductor industry is the least predictable.

Who could have predicted the election mess, and the consequent impact on the Christmas buying pattern ? Intel is missing its forecast by 5%, while Apple is adjusting it by 33%. If you follow Motorola its misses are much worse than Intel's misses. In my opinion Carly Fiorina at HP takes the cake ! After the quarter closed, she informed the analysts that HP would makes its numbers.[ No guess work and judgement needed here, since you are reporting history, and all you need to do is to fine tune the numbers !] Yet when the earning report came out, HP made its Revenue Forecast, but missed its Profit Forecast by a mile! She is a newcomer to HP, and got away by blaming the HP financial system for this blunder. Lucent, of which Carly is an alumnus, works in a more predictable business, has set the standard in poor forecasts !

Andy comes across as a very detailed and careful individual, but lacks the charisma of a marketing type. But for a CFO of a treacherous business, better him than someone with a glib tongue.
