Dimples are created when the cards are run through the machines that count them.
Someone told you a bad story. I spent many years using card readers before newer technologies took over so you aren't going to fool me on the characteristics of a punch card and reader. Except in the case of a jam, which crumples the card into a mess, the reader helps keep the card straight. Boxes of cards from storage were regularly run though reader sorters for no other reason than to keep them straight and to keep them from sticking together.
