This snafu was a natural byproduct of a "close counts" paper ballot system. That's all it is. Usually such occurs in mayoral races in Sioux Falls, S.D. This time it occurred in the Big One. Gore said a few days after the election: Recount the entire state by hand, and I won't mount any legal challenges. Jim Baker, who orchestrated GWB Sr.'s loss in '92, said no. He should have said yes. I still think Bush will pull this out some way, but he's lost a lot of ground (read credibility) by adopting the strategy he did.

I would also add the notion that Dems somehow "keep counting until they win" is complete nonsense.

Do you for a minute think that Bush not have done similar if he was 1,000 votes down on Nov. 8?
