Many of the undervote are merely hanging chads that have a 50% chance (or greater) of hanging closed when they run through the machine.

If this was the standard used I dont think I would have a problem with it. However, in Broward County they were counting ballots in which an indentation had occurred on a candidates name....and the rest of the ballot had votes (correctly punched through) aligned with that candidates party. Basically....you couldnt split your vote, or decide not to vote in the Presidential election. They decided for you....

Regardless with what happens with the current recount, the Broward county votes will end up counting (about 400 for Gore). This is precisely the type of subjectivity I do not want in the election....

Imagine if this power was conferred to the Democratic Party in Chicago (or the Republican party in other locales)....the opposition would never have a chance.

but it is my impression that the canvassing boards are doing a commendable job of counting the votes

I heard (but have not yet read the article) that Newsweek said the opposite about the Broward County folk! The impression I got was that the operative rule was "find votes for Gore!"

No coincidence that the Gore people tried many times to get the Palm Beach Canvassing Board to change its method to the same as Broward County and even the local judge, twice, said no.

Look, this whole thing was fed by the fact Gore won (well within the margin of error) the national vote and the conviction that they had the support (democratic control of key county canvassing boards & the Florida Supreme Court) to find the votes to put him over the top in Florida.

The fly in the plan was that no one expected the USSC to take the case.

By the way, a little noticed ruling today by a US District Judge ordered counties to count the military rejected on technicalities (like missing a postal stamp because they were mailed from a ship).
