That's exactly what I used to do. I used to carry a gas can in the trunk. I didn't think it was the fuel pump either because it was so intermittent. Every time I took in to the mechanic it was OK. They caught it one time when I took it in for a valve adjustment and after it sat for awhile it died after a restart. Never had the problem again.
