Here's a link to info on mprexe.exe not responding. There are several references to networking and printing problems.

hi frank,

i'll visit the w2k power options today. thanks for the heads up. the more folks using win2000 around here, the better. (i mean from a help available stand point.) i have seen the 'stand by' option in the shut down dialog, but have just breezed right past it.

regarding service pack 1, have you glanced at the list of win2000 bugs that it fixes? <g>

support.microsoft.com
support.microsoft.com
support.microsoft.com

regarding NTFS, i opted for it during install, and now i'm considering reverting back to fat32. i have to do some research, but i am discouraged with the amount of fragmentation in win2000, and i believe that is directly attributable to NTFS. i am defragging about twice as frequently with w2k as with w98se (i set the alarm level at 95%, meaning 5% fragmentation). if it's the filing system that is responsible for this, i will definitely adios NTFS.

"At this point I know I'm over my head for sure, but I have come a long way just by reading the directions on the box and hanging out here. :)"

as are a great many of us here! but we never let that stop us from forging ahead!! <g3>

as for the w98 probs, it sounds as though you are having probs at both boot up and shut down? and even in between. <g> i want to poke around a bit more for some things. but let me ask, have you tried removing the printer (in add/remove hardware) and letting windows find it again? are you running the most recent manufacturer's drivers for the printer? and for the shutdown hangs, have you tried any of the popular remedies? there are more than a few patches and workarounds available, but before digging 'em out, i wonder if you've already gone that route.

also, i'm wondering if these w98 probs are recent arrivals, that is, just since the win2000 install?

and on the topic of whistler, i've been reading that ms will drop that name and just call it win2001. when my wife first heard mention of whistler, her highly comedic response was, "oh, i bet that one makes a lot of noise".

good luck

:)

frank,

i hope you don't mind if i submit this method of yours to microsoft as a possible workaround for some of their more annoying problems? i'm certain that nearly everyone of us has tried it, and most more than once!
