JAPAN'S PCCW TAKES SHARE OF B-FACTORY

Cyberbiz Brief

By JON HERSKOVITZ

Japan broadband player Pacific Century CyberWorks Japan has taken a controlling stake in B-Factory, a subsidiary of toymaker Bandai that provides digital content for Japan's popular Internet-enabled cellular telephones. PCCW Japan paid about $2.8 million for the 51% share as it tries to expand its content in land-line and mobile broadband contents.

B-Factory developed Web sites for mobile phones that provide content, including fortune telling, and it has about 400,000 subscribers. In 2001 it plans to expand into animation for mobile phones. It already has service on the top platforms including i-mode from NTT DoCoMo -- Japan's top Internet access point with more than 14 million users -- and EZ-Web from mobile operator J-Phone. Earlier this year, PCCW Japan took over video game software developer Jaleco through a stock purchase as it gears up for its launch of consumer services in 2001.
