Tony,

Computers transfer critical data very reliably with parity, error correction and redundancy. Comparing them with a punchcard voting machine is not a good analogy.

TO ALL ____ ON TOPIC

i talked to a Compaq business manager in charge of what
they call "industry standard servers" (that means 100% Intel inside, the designation is Compaq internal, because
they have other stuff like alpha and himalaya and need to differentiate).

For Germany the unit shipment forecast is 65000 units in CY2001 vs 47000 in CY2000, implying 40 % growth.
The revenue number was somewhat lower but my point remains.

Now, I wouldn't call Germany the holy-grail <g>, but even admitting there is a recovery in Euroland (of which Germany is the heavy weight ) that ain't too bearish for Intel, no ?

I remember a few years back, when I used to be a SUNW shareholder and SUNW was (at the time) dwarfed by WINTEL
as they saw their workstation ms dwindling away. At the time I bumped into those that said Sun demise was imminent (1996-7 time frame, mind you). The fact is ULTRA enterprise came along (from CRAY) and picked up the slack, if it were JAVA only the bears would have been spot on right.

This brings me to the basic point :
the desktop sucks, the interest rates are unnecessary high, and Florida counts again ...

SO WHAT

Look at the other side of the coin
- servers are booming -- without even a pale shadow of AMD
- notebooks are booming --- no Transmeta inside
- hand held devices are booming, e.g Compaq ipaq (Intel inside + WINDOWS CE)and 3coms/PAlm in retreat.

So do you still believe the organized sabotage on this thread, or Peck, or Osha, or Levy, or the next SSB a**e ?
