Putting partisan politics aside for a moment, I think we all want to offer kudos to President Bill Clinton for his tireless efforts to secure the release of Edmund Pope:

Putin Indicates He Will Pardon American

MAGNITOGORSK, Russia (AP) - Saying he wants to maintain good relations with the United States, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that he will pardon businessman Edmond Pope, whose 20-year prison sentence for espionage cast a pall over ties between the Cold War rivals. Putin did not give a specific date for the pardon, but said it could be some time after Dec. 14 because clemency may not be granted until a week after sentencing. It was the first time in 40 years that an American has been convicted in Russia on espionage charges.
