The irony is that Bush probably would have kept his lead as republican counties and inclusion of more absentee votes offset the gore votes. But the real issue is about changing the rules after the fact and breaking an unwritten agreement not to take presidential elections to court in the absence of fraud. Step back a moment and picture the situation if reversed. You would most likely be taking the opposite position and so would most republicans. But not this independent. I would have called for Bush to follow the unwritten rule and concede. And i think he would have. Gore put his own interests ahead of those of the country and its admittedly imperfect system. Change that system going forward--thats fine but not to reverse an election already held.
