It is the Repubs who wanted to win at all costs. If that were not true, then Bakker would have said yes to Gore's offer to manually recount the entire state. (I think Bush would have won a manual recount easily.) This would have made the results legitimate and GWB could have ascended the dais with at least some degree of personal respect/legitimacy. Instead, the GOP legal eagles have opted to play Dean Smith "stall ball," and even assisted the partisan hacks in the Florida General Assembly to select their own slate of electors "just in case."

So now GWB will assume the reins of the presidency as a political eunuch, emasculated by his managers and spin doctors. He will have no legitimacy when he is sworn in on Jan. 20.

The illegitimacy of this election will haunt the Republicans for the next 20 years.
