It is obvious that Ottawa would do nothing in the face of a western referendum on separation

Sorry, but I don't share your optimism. Consider that the West is a cash cow for the Federal govt.....and an ungrateful one at that, according to Cretien. The liberals , in a big part, won the recent election by overtaxing all Canadians and the returning a disproportionate amount of the stolen tax money to the east in order to buy votes. It worked this time just as it worked for them in the past. It is highly unlikely that the federal govt would willingly let go of their means to keep buying their way back into power.
As far as the military goes, it isn't one. Most of the enlisted membership are easterners that joined for economic reasons and the security of a "government job". I doubt there is much patriotism there, but there might be a vicious intent to defend this security.
Quebec has been used by the feds as a pawn in their little game of creating the illusion of being saviours of the country. Just think of all the photo opps that have been created by and for the liberal talking heads, courtesy of fighting the "evil seperatists".
It's a game of smoke, mirrors, deceptions and deceit .... and it's being won by the most arrogant bunch of self-serving bastards to ever slime their way into ottawa.

As I'm sure you're well aware, Liberal politicians hold western Canada very dearly in their hearts. As a region which sends vast quantities of resources and a few opposition MPs to Ottawa, the west is a very important piece of the puzzle. As this puzzle takes shape, we see a beautiful image springing to life: A Canadian Monarchy. King Pierre, passes his mantle to Prince Jean, who strengthens the power of the throne before the coronation of Paul Jr. The lines of succession remain unbroken, except for brief, awkward, periods, when the Jester Joe, Knave Brian, and Queen Kim sneak unto the throne. Meanwhile, Canadians bow, and pledge ballot-box allegiance to their master, while backbench MPs kiss rings and arses for cabinet posts.

The west will never leave. The leash is strong and short.

Cheers, PW.
