Socialism has never worked and is also unjust. We just need a livable minimum wage.

Translates into a minimum wage that allows survival and a shred of dignity. Our compassionate conservative hero (compassion for the wealthy, conservative for the poor) George DWI Bush managed to keep the minimum wage in Texas at $3.35 per hour, while it was $2 per hour higher in almost every other state.

Robert Altinger wrote that the U.S. is rapidly resembling a third world country (Newsweek 7.31.00 p 29). In 1976 the wealthiest 1% of the US owned 20% of the nation's wealth. In 1999 the top 1% owned 40% of the wealth. Note that this is BEFORE our compassionate conservatives take over and cut the estate taxes and income taxes for the wealthy.

Bush pretends to have a fair across-the-board tax cut. But his notion of "fairness" on the campaign trail ignored that he does not cut the payroll taxes, which exceed the personal income taxes for the middle class. He kind of forgot that the poor and middle classes don't pay estate taxes either.

The wealthy people and our corporations are strong enough to allow the poor and the middle class a living wage. With Greenspan's help, they can manage to deal with the possibility of some inflation due to higher minimum wages.

When will George Bush and the Republicans will finally have enough--when the top 1% has 60% of our nation's wealth? 80%? 99%? When most of the Republicans live in gated communities to protect themselves from the rest of the country who is homeless and starving? When the U.S. resembles Peru? Chile? Columbia?
