It doesn't make sense to say that something is impossible before it happens, and then suddenly becomes possible after that. The fact that it happened proves that it was possible all along, whether people realized it or not.

If the two campaigns had agreed to a statewide hand recount during the contest hearing, for example, why would the court turn it down, considering that they ultimately ordered exactly that?

A full recount was always possible during the contest phase, so Bush could have accepted Gore's offer then.
