Re It also implies certain issues about its reliance on AMD

a pity Paul is not around these days, I can however imagine how he would comment this :-)

RE:"I don't wish to seem indelicate here, but it appears Gateway has just announced its FIRST P4. This seems substantially behind the launch date. It also implies certain issues about its reliance on AMD for its high end, but perhaps Dan could explain that better."

I believe Gateway has offered P4s for a few weeks already...
Best Buy has HP P4s back on the shelf too...

Re: it appears Gateway has just announced its FIRST P4

To you, maybe it appears that way. To the rest of us, who have been comparing Gateway's P4 prices with their Athlon prices for about 3 weeks now, it appears you are forgetful, confused, or doing well in some sort of drinking contest.

Just to clarify things up, do not get fooled by the Gateway 1.4GHz at 1999$. Gateway used a subtile trick to drive the prices down : they equip the p4 with a cheap Geforce2 MX which cost about 300$ less than a Geforce2 Ultra64Mb.

Went to "Gateway country" downtown Seattle today.....
On display were 3 Athlon systems and 7? Intel systems. THIS PART IS FUNNY....
I asked the polite non pushy sales rep if they had any P-4 systems he said yes they got this one in a few days ago . Their P4 display model was set up with a beautiful $2,200 19" lcd monitor he kept trying to show off what "she" {meaning the p4 system}could do but it kept FREEZING UP . He rebooted it 4 times before giving up on showing me how a DVD movie looked on the system. I will say it does reboot impressively fast....JK
