The finals were held in the Rambagh Palace in Jaipur today. This is the first time that a major gold jewellery design competition has offered a category for men’s jewellery accessories and it attracted more than 700 designs in 22 carat gold. A rise in disposable income and a growing fashion consciousness in India have contributed to the demand for modern male jewellery accessories. The Swarnanjali collection is dedicated to the contemporary fashion-aware man. While the pieces are trendy in style, they are also comfortable to wear. Derrick Machado, the Regional Director of the World Gold Council, which organises the event, commented: “In bygone days, men’s jewellery in India was ornate and varied. Exquisitely crafted items were a beauty-cum-status symbol. “Today, men’s jewellery suits the tastes of the modern age. In line with trends around the world, men’s fashion accessories favour a no-nonsense simplistic look. Geometry is the magic word and clean lines are the prerequisite.” An involvement in men’s jewellery marks an expansion of AngloGold’s marketing activities, which have previously focused on the female consumer. The company is actively identifying new market segments for gold and one of the fastest growing of these is men’s jewellery. Until today, it has been largely untapped with men’s needs not being met. Kelvin Williams, Executive Director: Marketing, commented: “India has a very special affinity for gold, consuming around 800 tonnes a year. It is vital for the gold jewellery industry to set the pace for new demand with original designs and different products for both sexes. AngloGold considers that Swarnanjali – one of the world’s leading gold jewellery design contests – has an important role to play in this. “Last year – the first year of our sponsorship of this event – we found that the collection was very influential on both trade and consumer tastes. The reaction to its showing in London and in various centres in South Africa was one of amazement that such modern, sophisticated and elaborate jewellery could be made from 22 carat gold. “Once again, the competition has produced designs in rich yellow gold that are eye-catching and fresh. More than 200 jewellers attended tonight’s event and we want to encourage them to stick to 22 carat gold, but to adopt more modern designs to appeal to both contemporary tastes in India and to markets abroad.” Bridal and casual wear were the two other categories in Swarnanjali 2000. In all, there were more than 5 700 entries for the competition as a whole. ‘Swarnanjali’, which means ‘an offering of gold’ in the Hindi language, was established in 1996 to encourage fresh talent in the field of gold jewellery design. In collaboration with the London Bullion Metals Association conference, AngloGold intends to show the Swarnanjali 2000 Collection in Istanbul in mid-2001, as part of the collection’s world tour. Situated between the East and the West, Turkey, which is now one of the world’s largest jewellery manufacturing countries, is a key market for influencing the manufacture of men’s jewellery worldwide.
