BGR,

>>The electoral college does exactly the opposite. Why is that a better alternative?<<

I believe it depends on your value system.

Some extremely bright friends of mine believe that in many cases they know what's right for society as a whole. I tend to agree with a lot of their conclusions, values, etc... The difference between me and them is that they would like to impose those beliefs and values on the entire country. I would not. (I'm not talking about religious values.)

I change my views on a lot of subjective issues on a regular basis as I learn more. I know I'm not always right and I also know that what's right for NY is not right for Texas or Utah.

My personal value system places freedom over subjective conclusion. There are some risks in giving states greater freedom. But I think there are also risks in political fashion, regional dominance, etc...

I would like to have the option of voting with my feet if I think my state is brain dead. I would also like the choice of 50 states doing things a lot differently. One might have it just right.

You lose those options if a large enough percentage of the population is located in a handful of states and the popular vote wins. They can impose their economic stupidity, political fashion, values etc... on all of us.

So I come down on the side of giving states more freedom and control over their destiny. It gives us 50 models to learn and choose from intead of one.
