Heuristic and algorithmic refers to two types of problem solving approaches. Heuristic strategies (they do not have to be informal) are designed to get to solutions quicker but without guarantee of success. Algorithmic strategies are exhaustive and will result in the correct answer, but they are tedious. Both will result in solutions, the differences are in time and probability of success. Our cognitive processes are mostly heuristic. If I asked you Beethoven's phone number, you would instantly know that you don't have it. An algorithm approach would require looking at every number in your phone book. Doc Stone
