Ellen,
Your post made me laugh in some ruefulness.
One need only interchange the names of Bush and Gore and the statements are no less true.
Why did Gore do everything in his power to abuse our normal and lawful election process
Can you really and truly not see what Bush is doing in his attempts to seize this election?

It has never, from the beginning, been a simple, normal recount that expressed an honest desire to "know the will of the people". Gore went looking for Gore votes in ways that went far beyond the mere attempt to fairly recount votes. And Bush went immediately on the defensive to protect his small lead in any way he could. It was a manipulative effort from the start and inevitably has led to gross manipulation on the part of both parties. At this point trying to explain and excuse the actions of either while condemning the other merely comes across as determinedly and blatantly biased.

I must say that-You astound me.
I am NOT trying to be flippant. Can you really and truly not see what Gore is doing in his attempts to seize this election?

There's really not much to be gained by hashing the same thing over and over again. But, at the risk of redundancy, I'll reiterate a few facts:

1) Bush is not "attempting to seize it". He's had it since Nov 7th, through multiple recounts.

2) Although the race ended in a statistical tie, by the election rules that were in place on Nov 7th, Bush won, like it or not.

3) Due to the nature of election laws, which are mandated by the US constitution, final authority of election decisions is wisely (IMO) left in the legislative, not judicial, branch of government.

4) This fact, under the circumstances in Florida (duly elected large GOP majorities in both state legislative houses), means that since the votes were counted and recounted, Gore has never had a chance of becoming president. Attempting to cherry pick psychic votes here and ban military votes there was both a legal and PR no-show.

5) Rather than recognizing the reality of the situation, Gore and his legal team have attempted to smash the rules and rewrite the process, threatening our constitutional foundations in a doomed quest to obtain the impossible. That speaks volumes to me about the character of the guy and what his priorities really are.

BTW, I'm not a rabid Bush partisan. Upholding and supporting our wonderful constitution is far more important to me than Bush or Gore inhabiting the White House.
