Re: What happened to 'broadband?'

"I think that we're going to see some backlash at some point..."

Frank- One would think so. It's so complicated and hard to pin the blame on the data-CLECs failings precisely on the incumbents. Nonetheless, I still keep waiting for something to come out of the FCC to punish the incumbents someway. It'll be most interesting to watch as the DSL equipment companies have been crushed to an extreme. Take a look at:

-Paradyne from $53 to $2/share
-Westell $41 to $4/share.
-Orckit from $92 to $2/share
-Copper Mountain from $125 to $6/share
-Efficient from $187 to $16/share

Just think these were buys and strong buys when they were at their highs. And none of these are dot coms by any stretch of the imagination. What a massacre.

These companies have real products and real sales yet they been crushed beyond belief. They are priced as if elmatador's projection about the death of ADSL is absolute. I just keep thinking of the 1 billion twisted pairs in the world and look at the slaughter these equipment players have taken.

I weigh this against the backdrop that cable modem revenues in the USA alone appear to be on target to generate some $10 billion in additional service provider annual revenues by year end 2003. Are the telcos really just going to idly sit by and let the cablecos steal $10 billion in revenues from them when they have an equal shot? I think not.

Now if the telcos do fight back, then are they going to be all totally devoted to Alcatel? I think not.

Now do we really think we are going to jump from twisted pair and HFC right to fiber with nothing in between? I think not.

But looking at the crushing the DSL equipment players have taken(And it appears HDSL specialist Adtran will join them soon), you would think otherwise.

Not to mention the crushing the HFC equipment companies have taken too. Most have been slaughtered just as badly as DSL equipment players.

re: "I wonder how Elmat feels". I feel very bad knowing:

How much money people have lost.
How damaging this is to the overall competitiveness of the US.

The ILECs is the 'Brazilianization" of a sector; whereby to promote the interests of a very few, the majority is squeezed.
