I think he posted that the mouse was showing up in devices as "serial mouse." If it is actually a PS/2 mouse, it should be on IRQ 12 and shouldn't show up as "serial mouse" in devices - but, since something weird is going on here, that could be the problem and the mouse isn't being correctly reported.

When the bios isn't set for Plug and Play, but the OS is plug and play (or vice versa) results can become unpredictable - I think there is a chance that is the problem.
