Lots of folks. In my part of the state, it is illegal to hunt with a rifle.

<<Who the hell hunts deer with a shotgun? >>

Some states, mainly in the Southeast where the cover is thick, allow dogs and buckshot. Illinois has always been shotgun but only with slugs as many states are. The idea being slugs don't travel 2+ miles like center fires do.

In the beginning slugs were accurate out to 40 yards. Things have changed. I have a Marlin 12ga with a scope that will do a 3" group at 150 yards with the 3" magnum all copper, fluted saboted slug. That puppy makes a 1/2" entry hole and an exit you wouldn't believe.

Edit. DNR people in Alaska carry shotguns for protection against grizzly bears.
