Thanks for the info, Chic. I tried to network the computers to RoadRunner using a Netgear hub, and can't make it work. Is a Linksys router different from a hub?

I have a sad story. I got back from vacation last week and found my primary NT machine was trashed (hard disk failed). That was the machine with the firewall software.

So I temporarily hooked my Win98 notebook up to the Sprint broadband connection. But forgot that the notebook's ethernet port had password-free microsoft file sharing enabled because it was set up only for use on my internal home network.

Well, in the 24 hours it took me to realize my error, some kind person had deposited a nice virus bomb. So far I've found 6 different viruses, every executable on the machine is infected, and several files aren't recoverable. Today I wipe the hard disk and start rebuilding the whole system.

Because this kind of attack is easy to automate, it's really important to be very careful.

By the way, I agree that the Linksys box seems very nice. As I rebuild the home network I'm going to use that instead of a software firewall.
