DoCoMo May Limit Cell-Phone Use On New Year's Eve

TOKYO (Nikkei) -- NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437) may be forced to limit the use of cell phones on New Year's Eve if transmission volumes surge considerably, company officials said Saturday.

DoCoMo expects transmission volumes to jump more than 30-fold over normal levels when the clocks strike midnight as people use cell phones to exchange greetings. If volumes near the capacity of the company's base stations and switching facilities, it will restrict the use of cell phones, including e-mail, between 10 p.m. on Dec. 31 and 2 a.m. on Jan. 1, the officials said.
