CB,

Re: Mark Twain. Yes the name does have something to do with ropes. The knots were placed at each fathom (6ft) A mark of two (12 ft) was a danger signal for grounding. The river shoals move with time. I have used a hand lead for measuring the depth of water many times myself. Electronics are only trusted so far -g-

During Clemens time there was an old gentlemen (rtrd River Pilot) who used to write a river report for the local newspapers. He used to sign his name "Mark Twain".

Clemens wrote a parody of the report, also signing "Mark Twain". It was regarded as very funny. From what I remember, the old river pilot never wrote another report and died shortly afterwards. I'm just working from memory here from books I've read.

Hence my comment.
