Baker, of course, never said anything of the sort. He has Herculean self-control for not calling these Nazis what they are, and describing what they are doing. But such a lack of diplomacy would lose the battle, which, while it may be won by the republic, must still be fought on the Nazis' ground.

If the republic wins here, perhaps future battles can be fought on friendlier ground, and the fortunes of the republic will gradually improve. I look forward to as much liberal energy and resources as possible being thrown into the irrelevant "history project" of recounting the worn-out ballots and trying to prove some insignificant point by manufacturing the votes that Gore & co. failed to do when it was important to them. It means that many fewer resources they can spend on their key obsession: damaging the republic.

Somehow, though, I think the Daschles, etc., are shrewd enough to see a waste of time for what it is. What I would not estimate so quickly, is that they will have much luck defeating all the newly-awakened conservatives on specific issues over the next 2 to 4 years.

It's been a long war already, and we have barely started to fight...

Where do you suppose this charge originated, some yokel on a street corner? No, it may have actually been Tom DeLay, but you can be sure Baker knew about it, approved of that language, and as the head of Bush's team, had the authority to tone down the rhetoric or let it stand. I hold him responsible.
