What is distortion?
When playing your music beyond the clean output of the radio or amplifier you begin to receive unclean power to the speakers. This causes the speaker to get high levels of static noise and could cause permanent damage to your speakers. When distortion is present the speaker pops and static is heard, to reduce this effect turn the volume down!

Does the STAC9708 support anti-pop circuitry?

The STAC9708 provides an on-chip sense circuit to shunt the analog outputs to ground during power-up and power-down, eliminating audible speaker pops during these times. The STAC9708 employs two capacitors, one to shunt the output until all system power has been established, and one to shunt the output while the system is powering down. The APOP control signal on the STAC9708 drives the gates of several FETs or bipolars that are used to perform the output shunting. See the STAC9708 data sheet for more information.
