BGR,

I'm definitely not an expert on the subject, but I'll give it a shot.

A true democracy has the people vote on almost all issues. Whereas a Republic (Authoritarian Republic in the case of the US) puts a buffer of (supposedly), more intelligent cool headed people in the middle. We elect them, they make the real decisions.

A good example is the electoral college. Our founders wanted well educated (or thoughtful, whatever) men to excercise their own judgement in electing a president.
