konabound,

Our firm recently went with Salesforce.com for our CRM. Others are also bringing out internet based CRM. Are the barriers of entry changing for CRM and thus for Siebel?

No, I don't think they're changing. It's always been my thinking that Siebel's weakest characteristic is that the barrier to entry is rather low. (That tends to be true of all software applications technologies.) Remember that the front office software sub-industry had 400 competitors a few years ago. Though there has been a lot of consolidation, the competition remains immense. If you are seeing more and more offerings of Internet-enabled product, that's because all front-office firms need to offer them to survive.

However, especially now that Siebel is the Gorilla of both the top-tier and mid-tier markets, their position is unassailable unless an attack comes in the form of a substitution threat.
