I finally got around to doing a rough estimate of how many shares midcap 400 managers needed to buy. According to S&P, the midcap 400 has a total market cap of $859B and midcap 400 index funds total "more than $25B". Assuming that "more than $25B" means "not much more than $25B", and that the $859B number is still reasonably accurate, that means that the funds own about 2.9% of each stock. For SNDK that translates to a little under 2M shares.
