I agree that there is something unsettling about Rev. Jackson making threats of civil unrest BEFORE the Court rules. Clearly, he wants to intimidate the Justices. Bad form.

I listened to the argument, and I know you did too, and one of the things I heard from Justice Breyer sort of tracks what I have been thinking all along. If it were possible, wouldn't it have been better, say, a month ago, to have a statewide recount in Florida with objective standards for counting votes?

But now we find ourselves only a week from the meeting of the Electoral College, and if Florida's Electors don't vote, then the entire state of Florida will be disenfranchised, causing the violation of the civil rights of all 6 million voters, not just those whose votes can only be discerned by a manual review.

Not to mention giving the election to Gore by default.

Jackson shouldn't be saying stuff like that, but actions speak louder than words. And when it came to counting votes, the Republican party took action when it, er, counted. You'll like this bit, Jackson even gets cited explicitly.

Sometimes it’s the same lawyers. Theodore Olson,
consigliere to Ken Starr and now to James Baker, is
admitting that the demonstrators were choreographed by
the GOP to pressure the local canvassing boards, the idea
being to beat Jesse Jackson and Alan Dershowitz at their
own game. Very clever. A bunch of screaming people
(most smiling for the cameras) can disrupt and delay better
than a series of motions filed in court.

And it worked. Instead of staying outside the county
building, as required by law, the demonstrators stormed in,
stoked by Cuban-American radio. The canvassing-board
members can be excused for feeling intimidated; unlike the
rest of us, they have to live with the explosive and abusive
politics of Miami. It’s the Paris Commune meets “Miami
Vice,” with Bush (or is it Elian Gonzalez?) as the dauphin.

It's a joke. W will be in, with whatever "legitimacy" Scalia can bestow. But it would seem perfectly reasonable to me if Democrats give him somewhat less "legitimacy" than the Republicans gave Clinton.

Cheers, Dan.

to Rev.Jesse Jackson, regards your statement <<Even if this court rules against counting our vote, it will simply create a civil rights explosion,…

People will not surrender to this tyranny…

This people will not stand by and accept this with surrender, we can afford to lose an election -- you win some, you lose some. You can't afford to lose your franchise…

The same forces that were against the Voting Rights Act of 1965 ... seek to disenfranchise us in 2000 and do not want to renew the Voting Rights Act in the year 2007…>> i say to you "Right On!" and ignore the whiteys trying to whitewash this behind a bunch verbal gymnastics.max

TLC,

I could've sworn you had written that! I like Jesse Jackson, think his intentions are honorable, but find myself agreeing with the writer of that letter. IMO, jackson's statements were inflammatory and divisive.

Thanks for posting that. It certainly ought to add to the discussion here.....not that we're a loss for subjects. :)

Great posts today, by the way. I learn and am challenged to really think every time I read this thread.
