Hey Warp,

I've taken that drive on 880 and it sucks. For the life of me I don't know how people do it. To me, a commute like that would majorly undermine my quality of life.

Nonetheless, I am resolute in my belief that the answer is not a wider highway. If that were a 6-laner, or a 9-laner, it would be no time before the same type of nightmarish snarling traffic jams would reappear. Flat out...if you build it, they will come. What we need is an integrated, more creative approach. Maybe widening the highway is one small component of the solution. But there are other components--many of which have been espoused by the "environazis"--that should merit more consideration by city planners and government. The one person/one car mindset is the underlying problem. With that said, I admit that I used to commute 30 miles each way, every day. No more, though. And it's a good thing with this wicked blizzard we're having in the Windy City today.

Does this OSX rally have legs...or do I flip the FLC shares I picked up the other day??

Best,

-Minos

Recovering Californian here, on Bay Bridge when it "broke" in '89 quake, 20 secs ahead of that crack and 3 mins in front of sandwiched freeway. Just want to say there IS life outside of CA! Housing and commute time 50% less, or more. Reward yourself and flee ... before 'the big one' ;}

To Warp and Ya'all in dat Silicon Valley, I lived off Highway 9 between the Fremont High School (which I graduated from in 63) and the El Camino Real in 55 and 56 when it was a 2 lane road and nothing but orchards, then again in 59 to 66. I think the 880 your referring to run's in front of the state mental hospital in Milpitas (which was the arm pit of the Santa Clara Valley pre Silicon Valley)and was also a 2 lane road at the time.
Houston is almost as bad as where your are, Austin is blowing up and the traffic is becoming more than a pain in the ars, but the area is nice. San Antonio is also nice, but the traffic is also getting worse by the day. Your best bet is to work at home and you'll have it made. Kerville is great, ask Big Dog, he lives in that area and it's about an hour north of San Antonio. You might want to try Marfa, I here there isn't much traffic out there and it's the sail plane capitol of Texas.
