Francis Collins & Craig Venter

Within the study of human DNA-coded biochemical instructions that are literally the building blocks of the human body-lie the keys to diagnosing and treating any number of devastating diseases, from diabetes to heart disease to Alzheimer's. On June 26, Francis Collins, director of the National Genome Research Institute and head of the U.S. government's Human Genome Project (HGP), and Craig Venter, CEO of Celera Genomics, a private corporation that had been conducting its own independent genome-sequencing project, announced that, after nearly a decade of work, both projects had deciphered essentially all of the 3.1 billion "letters" that make up human DNA. The mapping of the genome is the latest breakthrough in the study launched by pioneering scientists and Nobel Prize winners James Watson and Frances Crick, who first discovered the structure of DNA in 1953.

What has been the greatest scientific discovery of the last century?
