customer problem that is so painful I'd consider it a prerequisite that must be in place for a tornado to form

So you would rule out a Poke-e-Mon tornado driven by desire or peer pressure and not overwhelming need?

Giving it another thought, you are probably right in arguing that the compelling customer problem is a prerequisite for the Tornado to form. I actually put this already in an earlier post admitting it is implied in the Tornado criteria.

However, I am not very happy with the "Tornado" as is because it is pretty vague. I would prefer to split the Tornado into the compelling reason and potential market size, or, following TRFM terms, the GAP and CAP, which form the Tornado. (Fig. 4.6a, 4.6b, Page 97/98 TRFM - The colored section is basically the Tornado market).

The potential customers at a given point in time and their willingness to pay extra money for the solution to solve their problem defines the height of the curve. The higher the urge to buy the higher is the curve (probably broader as well), bringing in the returns earlier.

For evaluating an existing Gorillas the Tornado criteria can stand for itself, as a hunting equipment for Baby Gorillas I personally would prefer the two constituents.

Speaking of babies, regarding to Pok-e-Mons, the "compelling reasons" can be very different for different kind of customers, but can be a VERY URGENT need for some kind ;-)
