I recall that one of the reasons that the Japanese telco NTT is installing fiber directly to neighborhood homes is because they could not muster up the necessary outdoor spaces necessary to place their NGDLC/DSL cans (pedestals and vaults used to house DSLAMs) out in the field. This, ostensibly, is due to the highly-congested conditions in urban Japanese neighborhoods. Maybe NTT can learn something from SBC's appeal to end users for network alms...

Are things any different for wireless, where SPs must petition landlords to use roof accommodations?

How SBC will cool ADSL pace: Blame Ameritech. Blame the lack of space for Outdoor Units then the ADSL roll out will taper off.
