Prosperity does tend to foster an ideological laissez-faire attitude, especially among middle-class working people. This election thing is a good example. I think the majority didn't vote for either of the clowns now contesting, and care very little for the whole thing except as spectacle - much like the "blow-job" impeachment. I can't imagine open warfare in the streets between Reps and Dems as there was in Germany for more than ten years leading up to '33.
