Jim, it appears we may have found a middle ground for agreement. Although, I would caution that this formula only takes into account the two titan industries at large today, cabledom and telcodom.

There are others lurking into broadbandland, including wireless plays and independent fiber pullers, who would take the whole pie, given the chance. Already many of us are questioning why we bother to maintain wireline services, while we also sport wireless PCS services that give a better deal in some respects (most notably, LD, and the conveniences afforded by mobility).

While the incumbents may use cunning and strategies that would be unlikely by anyone else in the sector, they don't have eyes behind their heads. And they may not be looking into those rural and down-scale locales where, perhaps, others might find worthy of pursuing with the help of the utilities or municipalities, or even grass-root individual- and community- sponsored programs... at first.

For now, it's still a duel between the cable and telco players, when it comes to the last mile. But that will change in many areas. And when the bar on performance is raised in a given location where an upstart makes a dent, comparisons and ensuing pressures are bound to follow in adjacent ones. Especially where the giants are napping, or where they don't deem a locale worthy of their pursuit.
