No, I am on the side that says that people who cannot follow simple instructions when they vote have failed to vote, and that it takes better reasons than voter incompetence to have a manual recount. I am on the side that says that we cannot presume to read the mind of someone who did not indicate a preference, and that elections are about actual enumeration, not extrapolations, however plausible. I am on the side of fairness and maintaining the integrity of the process, not "evolving standards", selective recounts, and utter hypocrisy in trying to throw out votes on a technical issue in two counties. I am on the side of meeting deadlines unless there is a substantial reason to delay, which I deny. I am on the side of maintaining the sanctity of the ballot by denying others the opportunity to handle it and guess at its meaning, unless there is no alternative. As for whom I choose to believe about matters on the spot, well, we all have our surmises about reliability, don't we?
