I was listening to C-Span radio for a couple of hours this morning (travelling to and from court during rush hour). The Gore supporters who called in made it clear that they would not accept Bush as their president unless there was a recount. They are hopping mad and spitting nails. Which I expected. But I was saddened by the many black callers who said that they would never accept Bush because they thought he had stolen the election, in cahoots with his brother. They were saying that blacks were systematically and deliberately disenfranchised in Florida. One woman said she didn't care if Bush made Colin Powell Secretary of State, "Colin Powell isn't black" and "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Since I never listen to black radio stations or watch BET or read publications oriented towards black people, I don't know for a fact, but I suspect that there is some powerful propaganda out there.

White people keep hoping that black people will think of themselves as Americans first, and that doesn't seem to be happening. It seems like the more power and money and political influence black people have, the angrier they are. Or maybe that's just from a white person's perspective.

Whatever is going on, it troubles me. Guess maybe if I want to understand it, I should listen to black radio.
