Ken:

Another surprising and "troublesome" post.

the legitimacy of the presidency undermined by a manual recount of the votes? If the Bush presidency is that fragile, it is in big trouble.

You miss the point, and seek and presume a conclusion to my comments based upon an obvious bias and lack of objectivity or appreciation for any legal analysis. The Bush Presidency is not the label with which to frame this issue, but rather "The Presidency" resulting from this election. Because of the efforts of your pal, Al, in trying to steal this election, he has undermined to a serious degree the very legitimacy of this presidency REGARDLESS of who wins. His campaigned has created a false perception across this country that somehow he has won this election, and that if he didn't somehow he was cheated his victory. There has been no credible evidence EVER PRESENTED that this is the case, yet his campaign would have YOU believe otherwise.

It is not Mr. Bush's fault that voters in Palm Beach County can't read a ballot; it is not Mr. Bush's fault that Mr. Nader was able to lure voters that otherwise may have voted for Mr. Gore; it is not Mr. Bush's fault that the very nature of elections in this country result in many under-votes that DESERVE not to be counted. And it is certainly not Mr. Bush's fault that the Florida SCt granted an extension of the protest period that has cut short the time to conduct these contest proceedings. You, OTOH, would like to believe otherwise, as if you wuz' robbed. Get over it. And don't expect Mr. Bush and his lawyers to lay down and play dead and let Al and his gangsters usurp this election based upon legally counted votes. The bottom line is that Mr. Gore has lost this election, not due to Mr. Bush and the Republican campaign, but due to Mr. Gore's inability to sway a sufficient number of voters to vote for him over Bush and Ralph Nader; voter error in following instructions in casting a vote with a ballot card; poor jurisprudence by the Florida SCt. that IMHO hurt the effort of the Gore campaign to obtain a more accurate count rather than help it; and a poor set of Florida election statutes. Hey, I guess its because of all that sun down there, huh? Well, at least that is what they say about So. California, right, particularly up there in the sophisticated Pacific Northwest?

The legitimacy of the Bush presidency is harmed by the Supreme Court decision to stop the manual recount because many millions are more convinced than ever before the recount was stopped so the public would not find out the Gore won the election.

I would like nothing more than to see the US SCt issue a ruling today that would order the Florida SCt to resume a manual count STATEWIDE but to set forth discernible and REAL standards that would comport with equal protection. But time is running out. Why did the Florida Court not address this issue to begin with? Well, they wanted dimpled chads counted in Broward County, which is not going to pass Constitution muster UNLESS there is evidence OTHER THAN the fact to voter voted Democratic across the entire ballot by punching through the ballot card for every race but somehow managed not to punch through the card only where Al Gore's name lied. To not weigh into such "ascertainment" the possibility or likelihood that the voter preferred NOT to vote for President because he/she liked neither Gore nor Bush goes beyond logic. But the Gore campaign, and the biased canvassing board in Broward County would have you believe otherwise. Sorry, Ken, this BS will not fly past the US Supreme Court. This is a fact.

We all know Gore won the election but the partisan supreme court would not all the votes to be counted.

The FACT that you repeatedly state that Gore "won the election;" that "we all know Gore won the election" is substantial evidence that you are clearly in la-la land and are unwilling to approach this whole matter in a more objection manner

"Now Bush can listen to the mantra every day for the next four years - We all know Gore won the election but the partisan supreme court would not all the votes to be counted".

Yea, but he'll be sitting in his desk at the White House while listening to it. I think he'll learn to live with it, as Gore would the noise from the other side. In big league politics, it doesn't matter how you win.
