Yes, mam, surely do ... first --- to my recalling the story ... it indeed did happen back around 1915 era .... and not later ... and only once ... or at least I don't recall another . second --- it was horrible then AS WELL as now .. no excuse for my town but, it has changed in the past 85 or so years ... third --- he was hung and burned ,not drug. not that it was any LESS sinful, but just clarifying. >>>>signs saying "Welcome to Paris, Texas ... the whitest county in Texas" ... or something to that effect ... nope ... not guilty .. that was 50 miles south of here == town called Greenville which was on our way to get to Dallas .... recall seeing the banner and asked Dad what and how ????? he told me (I was about 6or7) that ignorance and stupidity were large stumbling blocks to being a complete person ...not to let things like that impress me but rather to think of the friends I had who would be hurt badly and be affected terribly by such statements and remember it ..... taught me a lot about life, that man did .... btw -- those two signs came down in late 50s >>>>no minorites in residence there nope ... that one is completly wrong.... no basis for that one at all ... >>>>>you're apparently a long-term inhabitant or native of the area? yep ... grew up in a house my grandfather constructed around 1910 ... parents sold it (didn't have a frontORrear door key) after I was married ... played baseball 250-300 days per year half a block away when I was a young'un ... cousin several years older lived across the street (I still own his house), another older boy lived next door (he played organized sports in school so wasn't available) and ME .... only three white boys (1 absent mostly) and 20-30 or more blacks played ball nearly every day .. I was 12 before I found out you could play baseball with white kids ..... gggggggg right now today ... here in Paris ... if a black man between the ages of 55 and 65 who grew up in this town ...that I didn't play ball with a LOT ... well, he was a whimp and didn't like bb ..... gggggg when I went into business my first hire was a black man ... as well as my first fire ... not the same man .... in the local Catholic Church we hold hands with each other and say the Lord's Prayer during Mass... for better than 30 years that nice guy on my left in the choir has been the same black gent ... our Priest is a native of Bangaladesh India ... he is SO dark that he makes a black man look kinda pale ...<said with a smile> and I've NEVER heard a single derogatory remark about him from any of my non Catholic buddies ... and I'm here to tell you ... we are the beltbuckle of the BaptistBelt ....and looooootttts of rednecks, too ... now .. on the more unpleasant side ... and long ago .. I graduated fifth or sixth (don't recall which) in my highschool class with a 96.something cumulative grade and I was not invited to join the NatHonorSociety cause I wasn't "all-white" .... and the town did have a Negro High School til late 50s not to say the situation is a whole lot different the past ten or fifteen years from what it is now ... example ===== guy who lives three houses from me owns the largest bank in town ... not works there but owns it .... seems like about 150m in size so it isn't too tiny ... my doctor lives next door .. guy who developed the housing subdivision (250 houses) his widow lives two doors away and her son is a paraplegic and is 4 months younger than am I, lawyer lives across the street (bot the house from another bank pres) and two houses away is the personnel manager ... what'd they call em now .. oh yeah .. human resources director for Campbell Soup with 1500 employees .. Director of the largest hospital lives three houses away ... Dude that owns the oldest company in town lives three houses away ... one of the city administrator lives across the street ...exChief of Staff of another hospital lives four houses away .... rancher fellow married to another lawyer lives three away .... and a 35 yr old KID (his dad is one of my best friends) is building a new house next door to the Camp Soup guy ... you get the idea ... ain't too much of a squalid area , no? well .... what do you know about this little ol sleepy rural NE Tex community .... one of those guys is a Jew one of em is black one of em is a brownieskinned from Brazil one of em is a cripple, unable to move anything but his right hand and there is ol me .... amongst those folks where we are all ALLAMERICANS .... makes me verrrrrrrrrry proud .... of my town, my state and my country ok ... for clarification of identy ... CofS around the curve is Jewish .. he used to live next door to me ... CampbellSouper is black .... and the rancher is hispanic from Brazil I grew up and went to school with the bank owner, the city guy, and the lawyer is the son of the doc who used to be in partnership with my next door doc, and the guy who owns the manufacturing co...... now gal ... that is what makes the USA great ..... spect half of em are Dems and half are Rebs I'm the ONLY Hillaryite ...... LOL
